Our proposals for the transformation of a London-based homeless charity's building was a collaborative endeavour driven by empathy and purpose. The Simon Community was the preferred charity of Bloomberg, and with their support we endeavoured to reconfigure the space to better serve the charity’s unique requirements, all while preserving the spirit of the community.
Our journey began with a profound commitment to understanding the aspirations of The Simon Community and the distinct needs of its inhabitants. Through immersion in their world, from participating in soup runs to volunteering in their kitchens, we gained invaluable insights. The challenge was clear: how could we enhance this space to fulfill its mission even more effectively, ensuring dignity and comfort for all? ...
The concept emerged from both a deep appreciation of the charity's ethos and the voices of its residents. Central to our vision was the creation of a double-height social hub, an inviting space where individuals could come together for meals, community gatherings, and food preparation. Simultaneously, we sought to revitalise the private quarters, empowering formerly homeless residents to embrace their newfound sense of ownership.
Our design choices resonate with the essence of The Simon Community, merging functionality with warmth and inclusivity, and enriching the experience. Each element, from the texture of surfaces to the flow of spaces, was meticulously considered, ensuring that form and function seamlessly coexist.
From energy-efficient lighting solutions to resilient materials, every decision contributes to reducing the environmental footprint. We've taken steps to ensure the building's extended lifespan and promote responsible resource use, aligning with dedication to a greener built environment.
