ScottWhitbyStudio's Jubilee Pool Featured on the BBC

Alex Scott-Whitby August 2, 2022

Jubilee Pool, Penzance has been featured as one of the best outdoor swimming pools in the world on the BBC’s culture page.

“The restoration of the lido – and extension of its café and bar and addition of a community hall offering facilities such as art shows and fitness classes – are reviving its fortunes. "Part of the pool is geothermally heated by drilling deep into the ground and extracting warm water from it," says Scott-Whitby. The idea for this heating method was suggested by local graphic designer Martin Nixon and his brother, Charles.”

Tri-Pod

Alex Scott-Whitby November 22, 2019

ScottWhitbyStudio has just completed a unique project for a private client in South London: a timber clad bed with terrace space over for a thruple, which they could use to sleep, play and relax.

SWS positioned a beautifully crafted piece of joinery in the centre of the pristine, high-ceilinged room, allowing natural light to flow around, over and through the structure.

ScottWhitbyStudio in V&A Drawings Collection

Alex Scott-Whitby October 2, 2019

Following the opening of our extension to the stunning Art Deco Jubilee Pool, Penzance, the Studio was invited to submit a drawing of the pool to include in the V&A Drawings Collection, the largest collection of architectural drawings in the world. As stated by the V&A, “Approximately 100,000 drawings made in Europe and the USA can be seen in the V&A's collection. The work of many schools, styles and periods is represented. Many have been collected specifically with an eye to why they were made; the collection is therefore unusually rich in academic drawings, designs for illustration, and in particular preparatory drawings used in the production of paintings, sculpture, architecture and the applied arts.“ It is a privilege to be selected for this world-famous collection.

Kennington Offices

Alex Scott-Whitby August 9, 2019

The Studio is excited to be working alongside the contractor, TAD Contracts, to breathe new life into a tired and outmoded listed office building in Kennington. The Grade II listed building has a complex planning history and needs careful handling in order to sensitively integrate modern technology.

Exploratory work has started on site and it is anticipated that the contract will be completed by Spring 2020.

Penzance celebrates opening of café at iconic Art Deco Lido

Alex Scott-Whitby July 27, 2019

ScottWhitbyStudio’s sensitive addition to the Grade II listed Jubilee Pool was opened to much acclaim last week. The new sculptural roof floats seductively over the enlarged café and community rooms. This signals the completion of the first element of this phased development. By the end of the year, further facilities will be complete, and this saltwater lido will become a year-round part of the community.

Planning Permission for a Westminster Icon

Alex Scott-Whitby June 14, 2019

Westminster Council has granted planning permission for a significant programme of improvements to Grade II listed Westminster Chapel, the little known ‘sister’ of the quartet of significant religious building in Westminster which includes the Abbey, Cathedral and Methodist Central Hall.

ScottWhitbyStudio spent 10-days in residency within the building, working closely with the congregation to understand how the building operated during its weekly cycle and identifying where improvements were required. The proposals address the issues of visibility, accessibility and functionality.

The Studio is now developing the proposals with a view to starting on site in the new year.

Completion of Estate Management facilities, Broadgate

Alex Scott-Whitby March 29, 2019

The Estate Management Office for the Broadgate Estate sits at the base of the iconic Exchange House which spans the railway lines coming out of Liverpool Street. The Studio has given the entire management suite a makeover and the employees are now enjoying using the fabulous new welfare and office facilities that have been created. We were keen to retain the character of the original building and therefore the existing travertine floor was retained and refurbished, with new floor tiles being sourced from the same quarry. The distinctive arch structure was also exploited within the proposals.

The refurbishment works were a joint project between British Land and Broadgate Estates.
